AbstractO desmatamento da Amazonia, segundo previsoes lancadas ha poucos anos por organismos internacionais, provocaria drasticas alteracoes no clima mundial. Mas essas previsoes, calculadas por modelos computacionais que simulam como o solo e a vegetacao interagem com a atmosfera, estavam baseadas em dados inadequados, pois a floresta tropical ainda e pouco estudada e apresenta misterios que intrigam os pesquisadores. Para suprir essa lacuna, cientistas brasileiros e britanicos criaram o projeto ABRACOS, que desde 1990 reune informacoes cientificas sobre caracteristicas da floresta Amazonica e de areas desmatadas da regiao. Os resultados do projeto tornarao mais confiaveis os modelos climaticos e permitirao avaliar com maior clareza os efeitos do desmatamento.
